After Malaysia, Alibaba is gunning to open data centers in India and Indonesia
Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, is planning to open two new data centers in India and Indonesia in the ongoing fiscal year, that ends on March 31, 2018. The firm announced this at its Computing Conference in Shanghai this Saturday.
This move supports its vision to significantly increase its computing resources in Asia, facilitating greater support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) throughout the region with "powerful, scalable, cost-effective and secure cloud capabilities."
These data centers will provide the enterprises and organizations a full suite of services, giving them the flexibility to build their entire IT infrastructure for business on Alibaba Cloud or run mission-critical and core applications on it. Simon Hu, Senior Vice President of Alibaba Group and President of Alibaba Cloud, in a statement, said,
I believe Alibaba Cloud, as the only global cloud services provider originating from Asia, is uniquely positioned with cultural and contextual advantages to provide innovative data intelligence and computing capabilities to customers in this region.
He added that establishing the data centers in India and Indonesia will further strengthen their position in the region and across the globe. The centers will be situated in Mumbai and Jakarta in the nations respectively.
Alibaba Cloud will be the first leading global cloud computing company to set up an international cloud data center in Indonesia. Whereas, at the Computing Conference, it has also announced a global partnership with Tata Communications. The partnership will provide direct access to Alibaba Cloud Express Connect via Tata Communications' IZOTM Private Connect service.
The announcement comes just a few weeks after it revealed the plans to set up a similar facility in Malaysia. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had said that Malaysia has been selected as Alibaba Cloud's Southeast Asian data center under Jack Ma's plan to help the nation develop its digital economy. He had added that it has been confirmed Alibaba will build its platform for big data for the region in Malaysia.
